Your work requires that you have a solid awareness of the value of privacy and the reasons it has to be protected. This is crucial for your own benefit since it will inspire you to work hard.
Now, that is for the work environment, but there are people who extend it to their homes. They want absolute privacy in their personal space, but is that feasible if someone else is accommodating you for free?
The OP of today’s story owns a nice house in a city that is quite famous for the resorts in the area. The OP lives with his dogs, and they have plenty of room.
The OP often lets his friends and family stay with him. He works from home, so he has his office in the guest house.
The OP sometimes rents out his house and lives in his guest house for months at a time. OP’s brother brought his new family to stay for a week.
The OP didn’t have any renters that week, and they had talked well in advance. Whenever the OP has guests, not renters, staying with him, he goes in and out of his house as he pleases.
This was an issue for the OP’s sister-in-law and her kids. They said the OP was not to come in without ringing the doorbell and being let in.
The OP told his brother, and he said that his wife and stepkids really liked their privacy. Read the full story below to find out how the OP handled it.
The OP writes
OP kicks off his story
The OP gets a call from his parents
The OP wasn’t sure where to put this, so here it goes
My brother’s new wife and stepkids do not want me in my house when they visit so I said they could pay me to rent it out or stay at a hotel. I also offered to stay at their house while they were at my house but that idea didn’t fly.
I might be the AH for not being more understanding of my brother and his family. Don’t care. It’s my house my rules.
And the comments from other Redditors roll in…
This seems like a one sided relationship
You cannot have it both ways
The OP was only making a point to his parents
OP’s SIL is the AH here
The OP showed the brother and his family a lot of generosity by allowing them to stay in his house without paying rent. It is just ridiculous that OP’s SIL would not allow him to use his house while they were visiting.
They don’t like the results of their actions, and the cherry on top is that OP’s parents are rooting for them. The OP was declared not the AH, and that’s where we draw the curtains.
